In Philippians 2:1-11 we're reading about the most epic display of humility in history. Jesus Christ, the perfect Son of God, humbles Himself to come to earth as a human and obeying even to the point of death on a cross. He, fully God and fully man, takes our sins and dies for you and me while he has done NOTHING to deserve death. That's humility Paul instructs us to adopt the same mindset as Jesus. We are bearers of Christ's image. Think of it like a mirror. We are suppose to reflect Jesus to others! To reflect the gospel to others through our actions and speech.
In verse 3, we're told to "consider others as more significant than ourselves." Doing something nice for a friend is one thing, but the humility we're called to requires complete self-denial by thinking of others as more important than ourselves. & We can't make ourselves humble. But we are humbled when we measure ourselves against Jesus and serve others.
