Since the Proverbs are mostly a collected grouping of wise sayings rather than one cohesive narrative, it can be difficult (at times) to isolate the theme of a chapter down to one idea. In chapter six. Solomon continues to instruct his son about the danger of indebtedness (vs 1-5), laziness (vs 6-11), and adultery. (Vs 20-36)
The Bible emphasizes that a wise person avoids “stirring up strife” or causing problems. God expresses a particular aversion to sins linked with troublemakers, describing a "worthless person" as one who uses corrupt, deceptive speech and signals to sow discord, encompassing attitudes such as arrogance, deceit, violence against the innocent, an evil heart, and lies, ultimately characterizing someone who fosters controversy or hatred among others (Proverbs 6:12–19).
In verses 20-23, we see Solomon advise to keep his fathers commandments, given they are Bible based. This will guide us and keep us from danger. As with other statements, this is a question of risk versus reward. Those who make good choices are not absolutely guaranteed a good outcome or an easy life. This world is broken and there is evil around us. We will all experience the evil of the world from those around us, a decaying world, or our own sin. So it's clearly true that those who don’t follow wise paths are going to run into more trouble and destruction.
While these are all separate counsel, one theme I see is the God’s Provision for his children. His heart of keeping us out of trouble. God is looking out for us! He giving us wisdom in his Word, through his people, and through his church. A foolish person is getting himself in more trouble. A wise person is heading God’s commands.
