Dig Deeper:

In this chapter, we see  yet another reference to adultery. While the literal verses cautions a man about a predatory woman, the principles apply to both sexes, but also to all sin. Adultery is a common metaphor for all sin, as something which is tempting but leads to ruin (Proverbs 7:1–5).

The “Simple” in verse 7 can be explained as uncommitted people who see themselves as smart and in control. This is really someone who is gullible to fall into sin. They are not wise. We see this played out with the seduction of a prostitute (vs 10). He is not thinking beyond the impulses of the moment.

In these verses, we see how the wise should acknowledge their weakness, realize what they are susceptible to, and be prepared to fight their impulses. Our hearts are deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9), and our nature is to deceive ourselves. Now, you may think, not me. The essence of deceit is that you don’t think you’re being deceived. The wise realize their flesh is deceitful. The wise realize their depravity (sinfulness). The wise realize they are their own worst enemy. The wise seek out wisdom and are cautious to follow their natural responses and impulses.

Why? Why is it so dangerous? Why should we be so cautious to make wise choices? Because in verse 23, 'it will cost him his life.' Sin leads to death. Sin is destructive.

What makes Heaven perfect? Holiness. It is without sin. What would ruin Heaven? Sin. Even one sinner would make a perfect paradise imperfect, whether it’s them or the result of a decision they make that affects the world around them. Sin destroys. This is what has happened on earth! This world is broken because of sin, whether it’s our sin, the sin around us, or the result of sin from past generations. Sin has proven its destructiveness. Seek wisdom because God is good and has our best in mind. Wisdom brings safety. What I’m not saying is our life will be perfect. This world is broken because of all the sin. So what I am saying is don’t make it harder than it already is.

Do all you can to flee sin. Share with Christ followers you truth and have them keep you accountable. Seek wisdom through the people who know you best so they can point out where you may be deceived. Spend time with people who help you to love Jesus more. Sacrifice anything that's going to make you sin. There is no sacrifice that is too great if it will save you from something that “will cost your life.”
