We see a theme in verses 10-11 and 18-21, where wisdom is compared to gold, silver, and rubies. How is it that Solomon can say that wisdom is worth more than the most valuable possessions?
If a thief steals gold, he can be caught and lose his wealth. But wisdom buys us far more than just an ability to attain precious materials, it also teaches us how to build up wealth that is not monetary. This life is short in comparison to eternity. We should be living for eternity not for this life. Thats wisdom.
Jesus tells us to “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20). He linked this command to the desire of our hearts: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” The treasures that awaits the children of God will far outweigh any trouble, inconvenience, or persecution we may face (Romans 8:18). We can serve the Lord wholeheartedly, knowing His reward will be abundantly gracious. “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
We are unable to live in a right relationship with our friends, family, and especially our Creator without having wisdom from God. We are unable to be the best worker, spouse, parent or student we could be without godly wisdom.
So let me ask you, if you were given the choice, and whichever you picked would mean you could never have the other: between $1 million dollars or the Bible, which would you choose?
Do we believe the wisdom that God gives us through His word is more valuable than wealth? That’s the way Paul talks, right? “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:8). That’s faith.
